More on John Waters
The John Waters quote is from his show, “This Filthy World.” Available here. Also of note, this Film Threat interview with him, which mentions the quote. The image & quote were found on Elissa Schappell’s Facebook page. And we can’t not let you know that we published John’s hilarious book, Crackpot: The Obsessions of John Waters. Read it!

Women in the movies who don't exist in real life. →
austinkleon: A list by Mindy Kaling (a.k.a. Kelly from The Office). My favorite: The Ethereal Weirdo The smart and funny writer Nathan Rabin coined the term Manic Pixie Dream Girl to describe this archetype after seeing Kirsten Dunst in the movie “Elizabethtown.” This girl can’t be pinned down and may or may not show up when you make concrete plans with her. She wears gauzy blouses and...

Ikea Hates Books
…is Gawker’s headline regarding the news from the Economist that Ikea is re-sizing the famous “Billy” bookshelf to be deeper - i.e. better suited for items other than books. Actually, as most New York apartment-dwellers can attest, there are plenty of books on our bookshelves, but also a lot of other crap, too.

But, dude, did you see that picture? A glass of scotch and a cigarette. That’s how it should be done. (Kidding, authors!)

The Book Collection That Devoured My Life -... →
booksinthekitchen: Luc Sante’s account of his Sisyphean efforts to tame his home library is the smartest and best-written version of this story I’ve ever read. Well worth your time. Love this: “Books are much more than container vessels for ideas. They are very nearly living things, or at least are more than the sum of their parts… . I realize that books are not the entire...

“Labor Day weekend is an appropriate time to celebrate the work of booksellers. Your totem animal is the duck, which appears to float serenely on the water’s surface while paddling like hell underneath. That is also your job description.” Robert Gray pays tribute on Shelf Awareness to all the hard work it takes to run a bookstore. Show some love for your local...

“This spot was so close to perfect we would not even want to tell ourselves how lucky we were, having been delivered to it. The best of new places had to be protected from our own cries of delight. We would hold the words for weeks or months, for the soft evening when a stray remark would set us to recollecting. I guess we believed, together, that the wrong voice can obliterate a...
